We Are Legion (We Are Bob) (Bobiverse, #1)

Very enthusiastic about this book. It's old school sci-fi, take one idea (self-replicating spaceships) and then explore it out to all its logical consequences. And it's a fun idea, well explored, and set in a situation that makes it interesting. And honestly it's two ideas: self-replicating AI with minor personality changes is also a key part of the story. And the thing that gives it personality. I found the writing for the various characters was pretty compelling and rang true.

I feel obligated to point out this book really only has one person's perspective, an American physicist white guy. (Guessing on the white, but it's written from that race-default point of view.) That's OK, not every sci-fi book has to be a work of intersectional feminism and not every author has the talents of a Butler or a Jemisin or a le Guin. Just I admire the diversity a lot of modern sci-fi brings so I note its absence here. Instead what we have is a very compelling sci-fi speculative novel that's written well enough to be entertaining and engaging. I read this super fast, too, like in 3 days. Rushing to read the second now.
